Sharing Best Practices in Fundraising

Crowdfunding Unlocked: Build Buzz, Raise Funds, Grow Support

November 3, 2025

Crowdfunding is more than a one-time fundraising tactic—it’s a powerful tool for building lasting community and deepening engagement around your mission.

In the webinar Crowdfunding Unlocked: Build Buzz, Raise Funds, Grow Support, hosted by Myriad USA, participants learned practical strategies for launching and sustaining crowdfunding efforts that extend well beyond the campaign deadline. The session covered everything from creative campaign hooks to peer-to-peer mobilization, offering guidance on how to plan, execute, and align crowdfunding with long-term development goals.

Crowdfunding as a Strategic Engagement Tool

Crowdfunding isn’t just a fundraising tactic—it’s a strategic tool for building community and sustaining engagement. Campaigns can spark long-term support when they center community ownership, and crowdfunding amplifies grassroots impact when aligned with broader development goals.

Mobilizing Supporters Through Peer-to-Peer Engagement

Crowdfunding can attract new donors and activate existing supporters. Peer-to-peer engagement emerged as a key strategy—organizations empower their networks to share campaigns, tell personal stories, and invite others to give. This approach expands reach organically and builds trust through authentic voices.

Planning and Launching a Campaign

Launching a successful campaign starts with intentional planning. Speakers walked through the essentials: define your goal, identify your audience, and choose the right platform. They stressed the importance of preparing assets in advance—videos, graphics, and messaging—and setting a timeline that allows for pre-launch buzz, active promotion, and post-campaign follow-up.

Crafting Campaign Hooks and Maximizing Impact

To stand out, campaigns need compelling hooks. Cara-Jean Petersen shared examples like matching gifts, themed challenges, and storytelling. She emphasized the role of marketing and communications—consistent updates, strong visuals, and clear calls to action keep momentum high and deepen engagement throughout the campaign.

Aligning Crowdfunding with Long-Term Fundraising

Rather than treating crowdfunding as a one-off event, the panel encouraged integrating it into the organization’s overall fundraising strategy. Campaigns can serve as entry points for new donors, complement annual appeals, and support specific program goals. When aligned with long-term plans, crowdfunding becomes a sustainable revenue stream.

Donor Stewardship and Long-Term Engagement

The session closed with a focus on donor stewardship. Organizations must follow up with supporters—thank them promptly, share impact stories, and invite them to stay involved. Turning one-time donors into long-term supporters requires consistent communication and meaningful opportunities to engage beyond the initial gift.

Moderated by Floyd Jones—Founder & CEO of BackBlack and Global Chair of Black Philanthropy Month—the webinar featured expert insights from Eugenie Munakarmi, Chief Operating Officer and International Development Coordinator at Children of the Mekong, and Cara-Jean Petersen, Chief Executive Officer of The Feenix Trust.
